Keepsake Salt Dough Ornaments

The cutest and easiest Salt Dough Ornaments! We wanted to make these and send them to our loved ones as gifts. You know the grandma’s will love these! This little craft is perfect for the littles and something you’ll cherish forever!

Ingredients:

2 cups of flour

1/2 cup of salt

3/4 – 1 cup of warm water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 225 degrees.

In a mixer, combine flour and salt. You can do this by hand as well. Slowly add warm water until flour mixture starts to combine. You will want the dough to resemble a play dough consistency.

Using a rolling pin, roll the dough on a large sheet of parchment. This helps to keep counter clean and also helps to lift the ornaments once they are cut. Roll dough to 1/8″ thick.

Next, grab your cookie cutters and your toddlers hands (or feet). Press your baby’s hand prints into the dough, then using a knife, closely cut around the hand print. If you are using cookie cutters, lift the dough around the cut. Place all the dough ornaments onto a sheet pan lined with parchment. Make holes using a straw or toothpick.

Bake for 2 hours. After 2 hours, check that the bottoms of the dough ornaments have slightly browned. If not, continue to bake until slightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool completely. I let mine cool for 24 hours before I painted them.

Paint them using any kind of paint you have, even toddler washable paint is great. Let dry and apply more coats if needed. Once they are dry, add a layer of Mod Podge or polyurethane spray to all sides to coat and preserve paint. Using a sharpie marker, write the year and your babies names on the back!

Add twine or ribbon and hang!
